The blue wrens are back!

May 22, 2010

blue wren

When I first moved to the hills outside Perth we had blue wrens everywhere. They pecked at their reflection in the glass window. They nested in the orchard and large blue tongued lizards wandered between the orange trees. But cats arrived on the next door property and gradually the wrens disappeared. I haven’t seen any for about 6 years. They are ground feeders and that makes them vulnerable.

But recently I have had a bandicoot living under the cottage. Conservation and Land Management have released them in the hills and they are surviving well. My single bandicoot now is a family of four. They are quite large rodent like animals with long noses and lovely gentle eyes. Perhaps that is enough to keep the cats away and so I have the wrens again….I just need the blue tongues back.
